YORK — It’s been an ongoing issue before the county’s board of commissioners, regarding hours, pay rates, etc. for the county’s veterans service office. This time around, it was an open-ended request to increase the hours allowed for the service officer’s administrative assistant.
Rich Hankel, representing the county’s veterans service committee, told the board Tuesday morning that they have submitted their preliminary budget for the new fiscal year.
Commissioner Steve Neujahr asked whether Sandman and his assistant were alternating lunch hours.
“There have been concerns about that,” Neujahr said. “I’ve heard that from my constituents who say there’s no one in the office when they get there.”
“They are supposed to staggering that time,” Hankel said. “That will be addressed.”
“And we’ve been dealing with this exempt/non-exempt issue for a long time,” Hankel said, in reference to whether Sandman should be salaried or continue to work on a hourly basis.
Brown said he planned to specifically ask for clarification in that matter during an upcoming conference for county officials.
“It needs to be addressed once and for all,” Brown said.
“Well, by increasing (the assistant’s) hours, that would help,” Hankel said. “It would be cheaper to pay her extra hours rather than pay him overtime.”
