Adjusting to civilian life can be difficult if you are having a hard time finding a job. Getting into a routine is important during this time as it is easy to feel lost if you have not done so. The skills and discipline that you learned in the military can be quite valuable in a business setting. There are companies that look to hire veterans as they make great employees and it is a great PR move for them as well. This does not mean that a job will be given to you so you have to identify your skills then find jobs that fit what you are good at. Apply the skills as well as focus on routine as you found in the military a consistent routine over time will produce results. The following are career paths that veterans can thrive in while adjusting to civilian life.
Jobs In The Medical Field
The medical field is full of jobs that require quick thinking and for the medical care professional to make the right decisions under pressure. Veterans can handle pressure as it seems like there is pressure during bootcamp, deployment, and many other facets of the military. The availability to get into the medical field or learn skills to become an EMT or work in an emergency room are prevalent. Other jobs in the medical field include that of nursing, becoming a doctor, healthcare research, or working in a mental help profession.
Private Security
Private security can be the perfect opportunity to utilize skills learned in training as well as during deployments to hostile areas. There are certifications that need to be earned in this field but they are no problem for a veteran that is interested in doing private security long term. This could require that you get certain uniforms or tactical gear as some private security jobs could be guarding politicians or royalty from foreign countries. TruSpec.com states that “Tactical gear can be used in a variety of situations but in private security jobs it is important not only to play the part but also to look the part.” This is very important as it is not only important to be comfortable but also flexible to be ready for any situation.
Personal Training
There are those veterans that stay in the routine of working out every single morning. This is going to lead to results that you will love to see both physically and mentally as heading to the gym when you don’t feel like it tests your discipline. Getting paid to workout can be done as there are plenty of group fitness gyms and classes available that need teachers. This could range from teaching a spin class to a Crossfit class where you participate in the workouts. There will be certifications that you will need to pass so purchase the test prep booklets and start studying immediately. Coaching at a gym can be a great way to meet friends that share the same healthy lifestyle that are civilians or even other vets.
Sales Positions
Sales is perfect for the veteran that can stay motivated and is willing to work on the intricate details of perfecting a pitch. There are times where a veteran is well-traveled so they can relate to many walks of life. Sales is about finding the right prospect and relating with them on a personal level to help close the sale. There are plenty of sales positions that can be done at home with huge monetary rewards for those that close sales daily. Insurance policies being sold can be a perfect opportunity for a person to work from home Veterans as well as former college athletes are perfect for these positions as they are competitive yet understand how to work in a team sales environment.
Welding/Underwater Welding
There are plenty of trades that you can learn in the military whether it is becoming a welder, plumber, or mechanic. Depending on what types of machinery you work on or the type of welding you do there can be hundreds of thousands of dollars per year available. Underwater welding is extremely profitable but it is one of the most dangerous welding jobs that a person can participate in. Welding the bottom of huge ships had led to deaths due to lights going out or a welder hitting their head knocking them out. Traditional welders can be extremely valuable to mechanic shops and can even run their own shop if they are a certified mechanic as well. Being able to weld together new parts can allow a veteran to make immense amounts of money welders as well as mechanics will always be in demand.
Civilian life is going to be a huge adjustment for some veterans while others might adjust quickly if they have a job lined up. Find employment so you can get into a routine of being productive instead of sitting around. The training that you received via the US military makes it a very valuable individual to society due to all that you have learned, remember this during your job search!
