Veterans Home in New York

When living in New York, it might be a bit challenging to find proper housing. However, The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)has collaborated with the  U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) Program to find affordable housing for veterans around the country. It offers help for Veterans to prevent homelessness and provides health care services across all 50 States.

In New York, there are various homes which accommodate veterans. They include:

  • Oxford
  • St Albans
  • Montrose
  • Batavia
  • Long Island (Stony Brooke University)

These homes accommodate anyone who is a veteran, their spouses or surviving spouses. However, there are times when they are charged for care giving services.

New York Property Tax Exemption

Some veterans receive certain partial  tax exemptions. This benefit is only for veterans who own a home or have a surviving spouse. Those eligible for this benefit include:

  • Veterans who came back home with available funds such as insurance, bonus or pension.
  • Veterans who received medals.
  • Veterans who served in the Cold War.

Hiring Preference for Veterans

The state of New York has a specialized program to place individuals in entry-level state jobs. This is an employment opportunity in which you have to meet the following qualifications:

  • You need to have served full time in the military.
  • Disabled veterans can also apply.
  • You need to be medically eligible so that you can apply. This means that you need clearance from the Employee Health Service (EHS).

New York Financial Benefits

The financial benefits of living in the state of New York will make you smile. If you had a permanent home in the Empire State before entering active military duty your income is not taxed.

The state offers a Home for Veterans Program which provides low-interest loans. This program is only eligible for veterans who were not dishonorably discharged from the military. Moreover, there are cash benefits which veterans get to enjoy. For instance, blind veterans and veterans who are not legally married get small cash benefits. If you are hoping to enjoy this benefit, you need to have served actively in a war for 90 days.
