In the United States, around 18 million people misuse prescription medications at least once a year. Whether it’s their own prescription or someone else’s, it can be a potentially dangerous addiction.

Do you feel like your loved one might be abusing prescription drugs? Then you’ll want to know the tell-tale symptoms.

In this article, we’ll show you the signs of prescription drug addiction so you can tell if your loved one is in trouble.

Physical Symptoms

Symptoms will differ, depending on what type of prescription pills they’re taking. For example, if it’s opioids, they might be drowsy and have constipation, while if it’s stimulants, they’ll be agitated and have anxiety. If your loved one is taking sedatives, then they might be drowsy, confused, and have slurred speech.

Some other common physical symptoms include irregular heartbeats, high blood pressure, high body temperature, poor concentration, issues with memory, slowed breathing, and reduced appetite.

In general, you’ll just want to see if they have any personality changes that are out of character. Powerful medications can certainly change someone’s behavior, especially if they’re abusing them.

Other Signs to Watch Out For

Many physical symptoms are very hard to look for. So how else can you tell if someone has something like a pain pill addiction?

By looking at other behavioral changes. While it’s easier to hide addiction in its earlier stages, there eventually comes a time where a user can’t mask their drug abuse any longer. This is because the addiction is so strong that they’ll do practically anything to get their hands on more of the substance.

For example, they may start stealing other people’s medications. Or they might items to sell, or outright steal money so they can fund their drug habit.

In addition, they might be “losing” their prescriptions and asking for refills from their doctor sooner than expected. The person might also start “doctor shopping,” which is where they go around to multiple doctors to gain more prescriptions.

Depending on the drug they’re taking, they might either be sleeping or energetic all the time, uncharacteristically so. They’re likely constantly irritated too. You might also notice them making very poor decisions in many areas of their life.

If you notice any of these signs, it’s a good idea to talk about rehab with your loved one. Choosing the best treatment for them can make a huge difference in their recovery, so make sure you do some research beforehand.
