Press TV interview of VT Editor Kevin Barrett
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has raised the alarm over what he called the weakening taboo of using chemical weapons in Syria. Ban says he is concerned that the use of chemical weapons could become normalized in conflicts around the world. The issue has already been the subject of heated debates as to who should be held accountable for the chemical attacks in Syria, and what role the UN is expected to play in this. We have spoken to political analyst Kevin Barrettto get his opinion on the topic.
Barrett is of the idea that Western media have formed a news blackout on the use of chemical weapons in Syria by US-backed terrorists.
“This is something that is never going to be reported accurately in the Western mainstream media because, of course, it is the Syrian government that is concerned about the use of chemical weapons by the US-backed, [Persian] Gulf-states-backed rebels. That cuts against the narrative that the propaganda forces were trying to marshal against the government of Syria,” Barrett reiterated.
As an example, he pointed to a massive “false-flag” chemical attack that was staged in Ghouta, Syria in August 2013, saying the attack was “organized by Saudi intelligence” to force US President Obama to say that the redline had been crossed and to set the stage for a major US bombing campaign against the Syrian government.
“The narrative that we’re being fed here in the West is that the evil government of Syria is behind all sorts of war crimes,” the analyst said, adding that “the [use of] chemical weapons was the flagship they tried to pin on them. However, he said, the plan backfired after it was revealed that it had been a false flag “forcing Obama to back out of his plan to bomb Syria. And now we are seeing that in fact it is these rebels who continue to use poison gas.”
He described the UN as a “dishonest broker” that has been waffling about the use of chemical weapons since the beginning of the conflict in Syria without pursuing any specific approach to stop it.
Unfortunately, it seems that chemical attacks are becoming normalized as other war crimes, Barrett noted, saying that the chaotic situation is designed to spread sectarian strife and turn Syria into a failed state, like Libya or the Balkanized country of Sudan.
“This is a plan to take down any kind of coherent state in the neighborhood of Israel that might some day pose a strategic threat to Israel,” Barrett concluded.
On October 30, some three dozen people were poisoned by a barrage of shells loaded with poisonous gas which was launched by militants against two residential neighborhoods in Aleppo.
Also on September 16, at least eight people, including five civilians, suffered breathing difficulties after Daesh terrorists fired mortar shells containing toxic gases at Harbal and Um Hosh towns north of Aleppo.
