  1. Wreaths Across America honors fallen veterans. Wreaths Across America, an organization that places wreaths on veterans’ graves on a designated day every December, works to exemplify “patriotism” with beyond just red, white and blue.
  2. Flag raised for Coast Guard veteran and artist. A flag-raising ceremony at Will’s Hill was held earlier this month for the late Sherman Groenke, a World War II veteran who used his artistic skills to make recruiting posters, training charts and more for the U.S. Coast Guard.

  3. Packages delivered to local veterans. Every year, Penny Sarles and John Barrett head up the charge of sending 700 packages to troops away from home during the holidays. Locally, the Jonesville American Legion Post 185 makes sure veterans at the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility get a package as well.
  4. Regional VA office cited again for mishandling veterans’ claims. The Veterans Affairs Office of the Inspector General for the third time in seven years determined the Roanoke VA Regional Office mishandled veterans’ disability claims.
  5. Wreaths put on veterans’ graves as part of nationwide event. Cemeteries are usually places of reflection, but on rare occasions even that solemnity can be added upon. That was case Saturday morning as hundreds gathered at Southern Arizona Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery for the annual Wreaths Across America Day.
