A STARTUP FOUNDED by a young and outspoken supporter of President Donald Trump is among the latest tech companies to quietly win a contract with the Pentagon as part of Project Maven, the secretive initiative to rapidly leverage artificial intelligence technology from the private sector for military purposes.
Anduril Industries is the latest venture of Palmer Luckey, the 26-year-old entrepreneur best known for having founded the virtual reality firm Oculus Rift. Luckey began work on Project Maven last year, along with efforts to support the Defense Department’s newly formed Joint Artificial Intelligence Center, according to documents viewed by The Intercept.
The previously unreported Project Maven contract could be a boon for Anduril’s bottom line. Founded in 2017, the company has said it seeks to remake the defense contracting industry by incorporating the latest innovations of Silicon Valley into warfighting technology.
Anduril Industries is developing virtual reality technology using Lattice, a product the firm offers that uses ground- and autonomous helicopter drone-based sensors to provide a three-dimensional view of terrain. The technology is designed to provide a virtual view of the front lines to soldiers, including the ability to identify potential targets and direct unmanned military vehicles into combat. The first phase of the research has been completed, according to the documents reviewed by The Intercept, with initial plans to deploy virtual reality battlefield-management systems for the war in Afghanistan. Some of the top colleges and universities have some screwballs as students. Many of these are bright but rebellious students who seek to push the envelope as far as possible in being a bad student. For example when I was at UC Berkeley from 1959-1961, no professor would take roll. They felt it was the student’s responsibility to come to the lectures and show up for exams. After the first class many students vanished until mid terms or the final. Where were they? In those days some hitch hiked all over the country. They even kept logs of the best place to stand in say Salt Lake to get a ride to Berkeley. One story was a group convinced a good Samaritan who was headed for LA but allowed them to drive while he slept. He found himself and car at Cal in Berkeley when he awoke. Most of these students flunked out but they were also very intelligent. If you are one of these today don’t accept the jobs offered in companies described in this article.
Boycott, boycott, boycott. Do not provide your brains to make weapons of mass destruction a murder. Return to hitch hiking if you must but do not aid the military industrial criminals at the Pentagon.
The most screwed up students and professors were usually in psychology. Even a professor decided to test the laws of falling bodies and jumped off Sather Tower before the glassed it in.
She quickly discovered the laws of physics even applied to her and ended up quite dead on the ground. Jack Y was a friend in a student living group where I lived Oxford Hall. He also majored in psychology and tried to cut his wrists one day. Others and I helped save his life or he would have bled to death. There is a lot of pressure at any school for some students but especially at the top schools like UC Berkeley. One learns to meet the level of competition at any top school. But again if you are a top student, graduate or not, do not aid in the manufacture of weapons of mass destruction. Find another occupation but not psychology.
