Intense combat is a very traumatic thing to go through. But coming out if it alive can be exhilarating because it builds confidence in your troops knowing they can survive if they are prepared, are fighting from good ground, and everyone knows what they are supposed to do.
I picked this video today as it shows the advantage a defender has when having some high ground to fight from and good supply of heavy weapons and ammo to be able to engage attackers at medium range, before they can bring you under fire from their own weapons.
As part of the preparation you will have have put yourself into the enemies shoes and figured out what line of attack you would have chosen, and arrange your guns and defenders to bust up the attack at it’s beginning. You will have a birds eye viewing of several such events below.
This requires having your mortars and artillery already “ranged” from their firing positions to register right away on the most likely attack avenues of appoach. You will see below trucks of the attacking ISIS people being hit 15 seconds after they arrive at their disembarkation position, and come under withering Syrian defender fire.
You will see the tactic of putting heavy fire on them quickly which drives the jihadis to ground, gullies and any low areas they can find from horizontal fire. Once they are stationary the mortars and short range artillery can be put on them.
If there are buildings nearby for cover that they can retreat to, then those become the perfect bombing targets. Defenders require a hell of a lot of ammunition to do this and depending on the relative numbers of each side, defenders can suffer a sad fate if they shoot off all they have with poor effect.
ISIS generally executes its Syrian army prisoners, something that Western media treats lightly, if at all. ISIS remembers the days when they were on the short end of the stick as you are about to see.
The Syrian anti-terrorism coalition has long proclaimed itself as the only effective force to defeat terrorism on the ground in Syria. The US effort is comparatively minuscule, obviously playing both sides against the middle, with the target really being the Assad regime and the goal of Balkanizing Syria for its own geopolitical goals.
You are about to watch a lot of ISIL people being killed in these knitted together combat shots, but it is really not sad because their days of killing others are over. Plato put it very succinctly, “Only the dead have seen the end of war.”
Many are going to see their end in Aleppo, and many more before the Syrian War is over.
