Reuters is reporting that “Lebanon believes Saudi holds Hariri, demands return”
“Lebanon believes Saad al-Hariri is held in Saudi Arabia, from where he resigned as prime minister, two top Lebanese government officials said, amid a deepening crisis pushing Lebanon onto the frontlines of a power struggle between Saudi Arabia and Iran.
“A third source, a senior politician close to Saudi-allied Hariri, said Saudi Arabia had ordered him to resign and put him under house arrest. A fourth source familiar with the situation said Saudi Arabia was controlling and limiting his movement.”
Why is Saudi Arabia allowed to exert power over Lebanon? Beirut, Lebanon was previously seen as the “Paris” of the Middle East. It is unclear why leaders are trying to compromise Secular, Western leaning governments for those which are detrimental to society by being under evolved regarding human rights.
Two days ago, Hariri received “received at his residence in Riyadh on Thursday the French ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Francois Gouyette, his media office said,” according to Naharnet.
“On Wednesday, Hariri received the head of the European Union delegation to the Kingdom, Michele Cervone d’Urso. He had met on Tuesday with the US Charge d’affaires in Riyadh, Christopher Henzel, and the British ambassador Simon Collis.”
It is surprising that the Western world is cowering to Saudi power that was previously clearly seen as behind ISIS and Daesh.
Also, “Turkey expressed support Monday for Lebanon’s political unity and stability in the wake of the resignation of the country’s Prime Minister Saad Hariri,” according to the Daily Sabah.
“On Nov. 4, Hariri tendered a surprise resignation during a televised address from Saudi Arabia.”
Is Turkey attempting to alter Lebanon’s previously Western stance? Could this influence be that which is causing Saudi Arabia to have a hold over Hariri?
