Better dead than fed! To an alien, that is.
Maine Yankee Nuclear Power Plant operated from 1972 until 1996, then was decommissioned and dismantled. Some of the waste is still stored on site. (source: Wikipedia). There is no other reactor in Maine that I am aware of. Gives me some reason to be skeptical of this story.

Government waste and incompetence may be the source of that Gamma in all of those locations.
