SV Pressa: Poland is concerned about the events that are taking place in Ukraine. The success of Russia’s special operation is positioned as a sharp increase in Poland’s risks, Vzglyad writes.

The publication quotes the words of the former Minister of Defense of Poland Bogdan Klich, who believes that Ukraine was a kind of security buffer for his country.

“If the Kremlin succeeds, the number of Poland’s hostile borders could increase from one to three: Russia, Belarus and Ukraine. The danger of the conflict reaching NATO’s eastern flank is real. We must eliminate these security risks now,” Ray Wojczek, a former military attache at the US Embassy in Warsaw, also said.

To address these risks, Warsaw is embarking on a massive reform of its armed forces. On March 18, President Duda signed the law on the defense of the fatherland, which implies a sharp increase in the size of the Polish army.

In particular, it involves a sharp increase in funding for the army. “The situation in the east requires an increase in defense spending. 3% of GDP next year is becoming a reality. In addition, a new funding mechanism is emerging, such as the Armed Forces Modernization Fund. All this will give a very tangible increase in costs, according to our estimates, it will be an additional 20 billion zlotys (almost 4.8 billion dollars – ed. ), ”said Polish Deputy Defense Minister Wojciech Skurkiewicz.

It is also reported that the growth of the material and technical base is expected. So in 2019, the Polish authorities signed an agreement on the supply of HIMARS missile and artillery systems with a range of up to 300 km to their country, and in 2020 on the purchase of American F-35 aircraft. Negotiations are underway to sell 250 American Abrams tanks to Poland. In addition, in 2022, the American Patriot air defense systems, as well as Turkish Bayraktar UAVs, should enter service with the Polish army.

What does it mean? Are they preparing for war? With whom? With us?

In connection with the recent claims to the Kaliningrad region and the intention to bring peacekeepers to Ukraine, this assumption is no longer shocking …
