In 1995, as the Balkan War raged in the heart of Europe triggered by the American counter-espionage of the Central Intelligence Agency just like the one in Ukraine, John Paul II used these words to remember the only possible heroism for a Christian: the heroism of Love for Enemies.
This sermon takes on a particular significance today which is the anniversary of the first apparition of Our Lady at Fatima, inextricably linked to the imprimatur “Totus Tuus” that Karol Wojtyla imposed on his pontificate in devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary who miraculously protected him during the attack in San Pietro on May 13, 1981, suffered by the Turkish hitman Mehmet Ali Ağca, when he shot him 2 shots.

On 25 March 1984, the feast of the Annunciation, Pope Wojtyla entrusted all peoples, obviously including Russia, to the Immaculate Heart of Mary in St. Peter’s Square.
He did it in spiritual union with all the bishops of the world. Over the decade doubts have germinated on the fact that the Consecration of Russia was done in the manner requested by Our Lady. However, in June 2000, when the third secret of Fatima was revealed, a letter from 1989 was published in which Sister Lucia affirmed that the last consecration carried out by John Paul II corresponded to what the Virgin Mary wanted.
Moscow, today more than ever a champion of Christian values, and the Orthodox Church, in Ukraine is bringing to light the hypocrisy of peace of a West that has instead, knowingly, denied its Christian roots (as ruled by the European Union).
Now I don’t want to pause to sift through those mysteries of every war that only Divine Omniscience can judge and understand.
Pope Francis tried to get out of the darkness of evil by retracing a new Consecration to Our Lady of Fatima: as if it were the booster of Covid vaccines ineffective at the first administration! As if the former were ineffective.
But he did not give enough weight to the fact that it is the de-Christianized West that denies the Immaculate Heart of Mary every day and rejects any dialogue of peace proposed daily by the Kremlin with detailed requests.
Every military detente of Russian President Vladimir Putin, from food aid to humanitarian corridors in besieged cities, is in fact interpreted by the West as a signal of war weakness and not a real desire for truce to a war that did not start on February 24, 2022, but on February 20, 2014, as explained several times and how we will explain later.
FORGIVENESS AND LOVE BEFORE THE DACHAU MARTYRDOM
In devotion to Our Lady of Fatima, celebrated on May,13, I want to linger on the sacred mysteries of peace and love.
The Holy Father, tireless messenger throughout the world, was the one who knew how to respond with poetry and forgiveness to even the most brutal manifestations of systematic hatred of the contemporary era: the Nazi totatilitarism of Adolf Hitler and the Communist one of Joseph Stalin.
The sentence quoted at the beginning of this article was in fact pronounced by the Pontiff in 1995 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the liberation of the Dachau concentration camp, in Germany, one of the places of deportation of young Poles by the Third Reich to which he then a young aspiring Polish philologist and playwright escaped thanks to his work in a stone quarry before entering, in 1942, the clandestine seminary directed by the Archbishop of Krakow Sapieha.
In the detention and extermination camp near Munich, a total of 2801 clergymen were imprisoned, of whom 1773 were from Poland: 1034 died, of which 868 were Poles. For this reason, on 29 April, on the day of the liberation of Dachau by the United States Army (29 April 1945), on the initiative of the Polish Bishops’ Conference, the Day of Martyrdom of the Polish clergy during the Second World War is celebrated.
Riccardo Cascioli remembers this on FiloDiritto (link at the bottom of the page) recalling the interview with Monsignor Kazimierz Majdański, archbishop of Szczecin-Kamień, one of the few survivors together with Cardinal Adam Kozłowiecki, archbishop of Lusaka, Father Marian Żelazek, missionary, an apostle of lepers in India, and Monsignor Ignacy Jeż (Benedict XVI wanted to honor him with the dignity of cardinal, but Jeż died on the eve of the announcement of his appointment in November 2007).
“We thought – the monsignor said – that the times of Nero and Diocletian were back, the times of hatred towards Christianity and all that Christianity represented. The concentration camp was the embodiment of the civilization of death: it was no coincidence that skulls were found on the uniforms of the Germans! Our German executioners blasphemed God, denigrated the Church, and called us the ‘dogs of Rome’. They wanted to force us to outrage the cross and the rosary. After all, for them, we were only numbers to be eliminated».
The same skulls today stand out on the uniforms of the neo-Nazi paramilitaries in Ukraine.
JOHN PAUL II TO YOUNG PEOPLE “GIVE YOUR LIFE FOR PEACE”
Both during the roundups of the SS in Poland and in the commemoration of the holocaust of Dachau, John Paul II invited people to respond with Christian piety, daughter of that Divine Mercy which he later elevated to a solemn feast with the canonization of Saint Faustina Kovalska.

During the Jubilee of 2000, on the occasion of the XV World Youth Day, millions of young people went to Rome attracted by the evangelical witness of the Holy Father and he, on August 19, during the moving and intense prayer vigil that took place at ‘The University of Tor Vergata among young people of all nationalities, reaffirmed the same concepts.
«Dear friends, I see in you the” watchmen of the morning “(cf. Isaiah 21: 11-12) at this dawn of the third millennium. Today you have gathered here to affirm that in the new century you will not lend yourselves to being instruments of violence and destruction; you will defend peace, even paying in person if necessary. You will not resign yourself to a world in which other human beings are dying of hunger, remain illiterate, and lack work. You will defend life in every moment of its earthly development, you will strive with all your energy to make this earth more and more habitable for everyone».
What is left of this deep pacifist legacy in the people of those grown-up Christians? If we look at the drama of the war in Ukraine, we are tempted to say little, if any.
Because also admitted the evil will of President Putin, denied by the very limited use of missiles of mass destruction that would have exterminated thousands and thousands of civilians but would have delivered the victory in a few days, saving many victims among his own soldiers, the Christians of Ukraine and those of the West should have responded as the university student Karol Wojtyla did in the face of German reprisals … With the forgiveness of the enemies!
This teaches the Heroic Gospel of Jesus Christ. It is a very difficult doctrine of the heart to live, even towards our friends and brothers when they offend us or hurt us by betrayal. And it is even more difficult to testify with consistency and constancy in one’s life.
But at least it must be supported, defended, and disseminated – without any hesitation, deviance, or exception – by the Church, by consecrated persons, and by Christians who recognize themselves in it as the People of God and therefore in their “agape”, they are no longer simple faithful but become a Body Mystic of Christ on earth (Encyclical of Pius XII Mystici Corporis Christi).
CHRISTIAN VALUES WERE DENIED BY THE WAR IN UKRAINE
I was impressed by the interview with the parish priest of Lviv who, denying the values of his Franciscan habit, invited the parishioners to arm themselves against the Russian invaders as if the reasons were only on the side of Ukraine.
But where was that priest while 500 children were killed or paralyzed during the repeated bombing with which the Kiev army systematically violated the truce of the Minsk treaties for 8 years by spreading massacres in the pro-Russian republics of Donbas?
Today I pause to note how the West has completely denied its ancestral devotion to Christian values to flatter a peace that without love and without God’s help is an empty and indefensible concept.
“You will defend peace, even paying in person if necessary” John Paul II said to young people during the Jubilee of 2000, referring to the most ancient examples of the Christian martyrdom that he first endured both during the attack on Saint Peter’s on May 13, 1981, and during his slow and excruciating agony of old age, without renouncing, until the very end in Lourdes, the pilgrimages around the world to spread his message of peace.

If St. Peter had armed himself against the Sanhedrin Guards to free Jesus the Messiah, he could have suffered the Crucifixion for the atonement of the sins of all humanity and be resurrected to be a living witness of the power of God the Almighty Father and of the Holy Spirit who is of it. efficient cause in the Holy Trinity?
We also evaluate the issue from a strictly human point of view. If St. Peter had led St. John and the other apostles against the persecution of the Pharisees, could the head of the guard Saul have been able to convert and become St. Paul?

Among the powerful of today, there are few politicians who witnessed the Gulf and Balkan Wars: there is perhaps only Sergio Mattarella, deputy of the Italian Republic in 1991 and Minister of Defense in 1999 when NATO began to massacre civilians in Serbia, protecting the massacres of CIA-armed jihadists.

Apparently the “eternal forgiveness” does not extend to even the vatican’s own courts.
