Editor’s Note:  Here is a book that will have you smiling as our author retells his experiences in the military with the broad stroke of satire about military life. You will be entertained by his experiences over just eighteen months of his life in the Marines. This book is written by a former child who when challenged by his first-grade teacher to a “If you can hold off eating the marshmallow I just gave you, you might get more than one” and then leaving the room which encourages him to take the opportunity to rummage through her desk and after finding the bag of marshmallows, shares them with his classmates thus, the teacher’s experiment in delayed gratification goes up in smoke or rather into oblivion. Humor, humor, and more humor, while pointing out and embracing the foibles of his situation, make this a fun read. According to our author, the military can be just another dog and pony show…..Carol

Veteran Shares Humorous Take on Marine Life, Military and its Shortcomings

Captain J.L. “Bigsby” Groom’s new memoir released

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Retired Marine Captain J.L. “Bigsby” Groom has recently released his satirical memoir, “American Cobra Pilot: A Marine Remembers a Dog and Pony Show,” a satirical but honest look at the shortcomings of the military based on what Groom experienced as a Marine captain.

“American Cobra Pilot” focuses on Groom’s first deployment to Korea and Japan, with each chapter highlight a part of the military that needs improvement. The entire storyline is set against the backdrop of American consumer society that has lost its way morally, financially and spiritually.

“My perspective on what I saw as wrong comes from my Christian view of man being bad in need of being made better,” the author said.

Throughout the book, Groom focuses on Korean military exercises he participates in, as well as the futility of these exercises. “Trump recently canceled the Korean exercises I talk about in the book,” Groom said. “During my time in the military, it was very easy to see these were a waste of time anyway.”

Pacific Book Reviews describes “American Cobra Pilot” as “a [sic] excellent book with some guest appearances by Caroline Kennedy and two ‘inspirational’ speeches from John Kerry and good ol’ Chucky Hagel… Groom fights his way through this reality, personal heartbreak and what the military deems to be his unhealthy relationship with things that go boom!”

“American Cobra Pilot” will hold readers captive with Groom’s use of humor and retelling of real-life scenarios he experienced. Readers are sure to be intrigued by the relation to current events and humored by his story and point of view.

  1. Carol, if you can find a copy, you should try “You’re stepping on my cloak and dagger” by Robert Hall. It is the same true anecdotal account of working for the OSS during WWII. It is hilarious, even more so because it (appears to be) true. You can ask Gordon about this one.
