Trump has shown he seems not to care if what he claims is later debunked, indicating that he feels that his supporters did not really care if it was not true, ie. ‘Americans were not abandoned in Afghanistan’.
This was your typical political psyop of ‘just put it out there and let the lie do its damage’. Despite the State Department stating on mulitiple occassions that the Taliban had said it would let anyone with the proper travel documents leave.
This makes total sense, as why would what is an overwhelmed emerging Taliban government light a firestorm by holding people hostage when shortages of all kinds of needed things are a much bigger problem.
It is a no brainer for the Taliban to want to get a functioning economy running and demonstrate some capability to run something more than guerilla warfare. And then there is the small matter of the reported $5 to $10 billion in Afghanistan reserves held in the US.
There is no benefit for the Taliban presenting itself as a pariah state when it wants to encourage development from any and all sources for its long term benefit.
The US and EU Gulf State allies’ abuse of women has never affected their relations negatively. Why should the West criticize the Taliban for doing the same without looking patently foolish?… Jim W. Dean ]

The manifest for the Qatar Airways flight granted permission for 211 passengers to leave from Kabul, according to diplomats in Kabul who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.
Mutlaq al-Qahtani, Qatar’s special envoy, told reporters that it should no longer be seen as an “evacuation” but rather free passage for those with valid travel documents. “We want people to feel that this is normal.”
“I can say this is a historic day in the history of Afghanistan, as the Kabul airport is now operational,” he said. “We want to have a gradual reopening of the airport.” He said he expected another flight on Friday.
“It’s my understanding that the Taliban has not denied exit to anyone holding a valid document, but they have said those without valid documents, at this point, can’t leave,” Blinken said in a news conference in Doha.
