Reactions to the Terrorist Attack in Kabul

WASHINGTON, DC — This afternoon, the Pentagon confirmed multiple U.S. service members and Afghans were killed in a terrorist attack at Kabul airport earlier today. In response, members of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft have issued the following comments:



Quincy Institute President Andrew Bacevich says: “The attack on U.S. troops supporting the evacuation in Kabul is a devastating tragedy. John Kerry’s haunting question from 1971 returns in full force: ‘How do you ask a man to be the last man to die for a mistake?’  Like Vietnam, America’s war in Afghanistan was a massive mistake.  It is beyond sad that young Americans still die for it.”

Lora Lumpe, CEO of the Quincy Institute, says: “My heart breaks for the victims of this terrible attack and their loved ones. Today, Americans pause to reflect on the tragic loss of yet more service members in Afghanistan and grieve for their loved ones; tomorrow, we can honor this pain and sacrifice by challenging the militarized foreign policy that has asked so much of American service members for so little in return.”

Adds Adam Weinstein, Quincy Institute Research Fellow and Afghan combat veteran: “I am sickened by the murder of U.S. service members and Afghans today, and I mourn for their families. The Americans killed at the Kabul airport were working to fulfill the duty we incurred to the Afghan people over twenty years of waging war in their country.”

I like the Quincy Institute, but if we want a real anti-war movement to honor the fallen then we have to take it to the street, and a coordinated march of veterans against war would probably get close to 2 million maybe more. We have to mean it and leave it stamped in fresh concrete in Washington. Enough is enough. And btw, does anyone from raytheon or the other contractors ever have to go to the mothers door ? Maybe they should.
    I also don’t do the sappy emotional Joe thing. This crap has to end, .. so so tired. So tired. Dam the warmongers to hell.

    When there’s no solid ground to build on; and everything is lies and propaganda, then whatever the “official” line becomes makes as much sense as anything else.
    If one doesn’t know what he doesn’t know, then any old lie will do.

    “On paper americans admit they have less than 1000 army personal , but they are not admitting 45,000 private contractors , Eric Prince etc , and Taliban are well aware of these private contractors and what they had planned , thats why Taliban rushed to Kabul to neutralize their plans , now CIA chief met taliban leader to ask for extension of the deadline cause they will not be able to pull out all of these private contractors , Taliban refused to extend ….. this bombing is plan B to force the issue “
