EU is playing the weasel with Iran on JCPOA

[ Editor’s Note: So here we are, with both the US and EU not in compliance with the JCPOA, and the EU now effectively threatening more sanctions on Iran if it insists that the EU live up to its obligations for open trade with Iran.

The EU’s measure now for assessing its own compliance is to just say it is on the one hand, and they on the other, promising to eventually live up to the deal at some point, which is an admission that it isn’t. Corporate media has not called them on that so far.

The JCPOA provides a resolution process for alleged claims of breaches, which Iran is kicking off with its mention of giving the other parties 60 days to comply or other measures will be taken. The EU quickly rejected this as an ultimatum, and yet gave not a word of news on when its BigFoot Special Purpose Vehicle, INSTEX, would be in operation.

Iran “emphasized that Article 26 of the JCPOA reserves Iran’s right to stop some of its commitments ‘totally and partially’ if the opposite side fails to uphold its end of the bargain.”

No JCPOA member nor the MSM has challenged the validity of the above statement. As usual, the fake media just doesn’t respond to it, as that would focus more public attention on its validity.

VT is in the same boat, when so many of our stories are never challenged by anyone with a reputation to lose. “They” usually deployed their Facebook trolls on us in the comment boards. When that did not work they blocked us.

Thus is the media world we live in, which we began exposing with our coverage on fake news five years ago, writing about its being done not in terms of a few bad-apple reporters or editor, but on an industrial scale, with lots of Intel agencies in it up to their eyeballs Jim W. Dean ]

Only Iran, Russia and China are in full compliance with the JCPOA, with the US totally out and the EU pretending to be in.

The European Union rejects a 60-day deadline set by Tehran for the remaining signatories to a 2015 nuclear deal to address Iran’s legal rights and protect its interests against US sanctions, saying, however, that the bloc will stay committed to the agreement for now.

In a joint statement released on Thursday, EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini and the foreign ministers of France, Germany and the UK expressed “great concern” about Iran’s recent suspension of some of its commitments under the accord — officially called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) — in reciprocation for Washington’s withdrawal last year.

Iran announced on Wednesday that it would stop exporting excess uranium and heavy water, setting a 60-day deadline for the five remaining parties to the deal — France, Germany, the UK, China and Russia — to take practical measures towards ensuring Iran’s interests in the face of the American sanctions that were re-imposed on Iran after Washington’s exit.

The top European diplomats said, “We reject any ultimatums and we will assess Iran’s compliance on the basis of Iran’s performance regarding its nuclear-related commitments under the JCPOA and the NPT (Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons). In this respect, we recall the key role of IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) monitoring and verification of the implementation by Iran of its nuclear-related commitments.”

In the statement, the Europeans further expressed regret about the re-imposition of sanctions against Tehran and said they would stay fully committed to “the preservation and full implementation” of the JCPOA, which they described as “a key achievement of the global nuclear non-proliferation architecture, which is in the security interest of all.”

The top diplomats further stressed their determination to pursue efforts to enable the continuation of legitimate trade with Iran, including through a non-dollar direct payment channel, known as INSTEX.

“We strongly urge Iran to continue to implement its commitments under the JCPOA in full as it has done until now and to refrain from any escalatory steps,” they said.

‘Iran seeks to bring deal back on track’

Tehran also said the measures it has adopted in response to Washington’s withdrawal do not violate the deal and are meant to restore the balance between its rights and commitments under Articles 26 and 36 of the JCPOA.

On Thursday, Behrouz Kamalvandi, the spokesman for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), emphasized that Article 26 of the JCPOA reserves Iran’s right to stop some of its commitments “totally and partially” if the opposite side fails to uphold its end of the bargain.

“Iran has taken the measure in response to America’s withdrawal from the JCPOA and the re-imposition of sanctions,” he said.

Kamalvandi also noted that Iran’s move is well-calculated, adding, “Certainly, our goal is to bring the JCPOA back on track and strengthen it.”

  1. Or maybe it’s Trump, that is made to play weasel with rest of the World. After all he’s “No more taxes” republican. The fact is, that USA coastal area antiracist, zero producing federal bureaucrats and insurance company lawyers have eaten all the fat of the land. Then Trump comes with the idea, why not call it tariff instead of tax and put the blame on China. Same effect but different visual sound and Americas manufacturing is long gone after all.

Then a phone call from Binjamin. Whining, that Iran wants to wipe us out of the Map, how do they get away with this BS. Sanctions, oil price up, money for Saudis, poverty for rural America. And then the idea, that America could begin producing again, like oil which could be stolen from Venezuela.

EU is in crossroads, and nobody knows how it’s going to be after Parliament election within couple of weeks. Britain wanted Brexit, which provided them unforeseen wave of 3rd World immigrants instead of educated Poles and Baltics. Anyhow now British banking sector is free from possible EU regulations. And of course China, they have somewhat different calendar as we have, but excellent memory. They maybe thinkin, that let them Americans rage about an let’s see after a decade (or century).

  2. One gets fed up always hearing this sort of talk from Euro pollies – “Iran should not take any escalatory steps…” It is good advice of course, BUT why do they never say that to the US!?! It was US that escalated the situation by withdrawing from a framework of agreements and negotiations. Phew.
