[ Editor’s Note: Zarif, as always, can run circles around “Pompeo the Pompous”, to the point of what should be an embarrassment to the latter, but he does not get it, despite graduating first in his class at West Point.
We have from multiple sources that the US killed Soleimani to eliminate his negotiating a deescalation with Saudi Arabia and the UAE. There was further evidence given that he had been talking to the militias to tone down their attacks during the talks to convince the other parties that Soleimani had some real control over them.
But there is another possible backstory, from suspicious me. The news last week mentioned during this latest twist that it was Israel that provided the US with notice that Soleimani was flying to Baghdad for a meeting.
That rang the bells that the “deescalation talks” may have been part of a sophisticated plan to lure Soleimani to the Baghdad airport for an ambush. Those involved are keeping their heads down, as the operation blew up in the faces of the perpetrators.
Sure, they got Soleimani and the PMU top staff but they were replaced immediately with adversaries ready to fight to hell and back for revenge.
And Trump and gang now have on their rap sheet that they pulled this boner and brought a ballistic missile attack down on US based troops with ZERO air defenses, and suffered 100+ causalities (so far) despite being given two hours notice of the attack.
The bungled assassination, and its stream of lies from the White House and the Pentagon on its justification, changing their story every few days, gave Iran a free commercial for displaying the accuracy of its ballistic missiles, something that will not be forgotten by US Gulf State coalition partners.
All Iran has to do now is reduce the weight of those warheads by swapping them out for mini-nukes and their range is extended along with their one shot destructive power.
Since Israel has an undeclared WMD stockpile, against which the US, EU and the world have taken no real action, then Iran has de facto permission to be able to counter that threat with an equal one… Jim W. Dean ]
