Dramatic discovery links Stonehenge to its original site – in Wales

Find backs theory that bluestones first stood at Waun Mawn before being dragged 140 miles to Wiltshire

An ancient myth about Stonehenge, first recorded 900 years ago, tells of the wizard Merlin leading men to Ireland to capture a magical stone circle called the Giants’ Dance and rebuilding it in England as a memorial to the dead.

Geoffrey of Monmouth’s account had been dismissed, partly because he was wrong on other historical facts, although the bluestones of the monument came from a region of Wales that was considered Irish territory in his day.

Now a vast stone circle created by our Neolithic ancestors has been discovered in Wales with features suggesting that the 12th-century legend may not be complete fantasy.
Its diameter of 110 metres is identical to the ditch that encloses Stonehenge and it is aligned on the midsummer solstice sunrise, just like the Wiltshire monument.

A series of buried stone-holes that follow the circle’s outline has been unearthed, with shapes that can be linked to Stonehenge’s bluestone pillars. One of them bears an imprint in its base that matches the unusual cross-section of a Stonehenge bluestone “like a key in a lock”, the archaeologists discovered.



Mike Parker Pearson, a professor of British later prehistory at University College London, told the Guardian: “I’ve been researching Stonehenge for 20 years now and this really is the most exciting thing we’ve ever found.”

The evidence backs a century-old theory that the nation’s greatest prehistoric monument was built in Wales and venerated for hundreds of years before being dismantled and dragged to Wiltshire, where it was resurrected as a second-hand monument.  read more…

  1. Menhirs, Obelisks and Standing Stones:

    The Rudston Monolith is the tallest Standing Stone in Britain in what is said to be its oldest village. Rudston has a stream called the Gypsey Race running through it. Gypsy is derived from ‘Egyptian’ (though their language has Hindi, Punjabi and Sanskrit roots).

    Widespread appearance of menhirs began in Neolithic Europe, at around 4,000 BC, the same time as the first Egyptian obelisks.
     
    Atlit Yam is an ancient submerged Neolithic village off the coast of Atlit, Israel. It has been carbon-dated as to be between 8,900 and 8,300 years old. Among the features of the 10-acre site is a stone circle.

    Located deep in the Nubian desert, is the Nabta Playa stone circle.

  2. The old saying, Wisdom comes from the earth. The ebb and flow of geological resonance with time, has always been known, and it’s effect on stone combined with human “attention”. The idea would be to track it, and get out front for maximum advantage. Something big, is not fun to move so the surveyors better be as sure a well diviner or else the diggers get predictably angry. Energetic pulsations are even more predictable now, but the mentality regarding this has diminished. The practice of grabbing the stones and burying under the church altar is seen as infantile, and hostile, because , it’s not the stones ! The big question about Stonehenge should be, why doesn’t every child know exactly what that is ?

    • yea, the fear thing comes up alot with the christians, it is more true for them once it’s installed properly,…then they even become afraid of stones ,..Terrifying !!!
