In outright rejection of US unilateralism, E3 tells UNSC Iran sanctions relief to continue beyond Sep. 20

…from PressTV, Tehran

[ Editor’s Note: I would like to be able to say that, with this latest plain English statement from the E3, the US JCPOA agreement reneging saga would be behind us, but as long as Trump and gang are in power, I doubt that will be the case.

With the US going trillions in debt year after year, it has to stay on full offense to keep the American house of cards from falling down. China, Russia, S. Korea and Japan have come through the virus in much better shape to withstand a US trade war.

Iran is now the most IAEA inspected country in history, while Israel remains the least, yet there is no move inside the UN to sanction Israel for its flipping the bird to the UN whenever it wants, with no fear of consequences.

The US sanctions threats on anyone selling arms to Iran will not affect any of those already under sanctions, like China and Russia. Putin parried Pompeo’s pompousness with his offer to sell Iran SU-57s, and S-400 or 500 missiles systems.

As China and Iran are in the latter stages of negotiating their long term cooperation plan, the ‘dual use’ ports doctrine has already been agreed to, including China’s announcement that where its ocean New Silk Road goes, so will Chinese military bases and everything needed to defend them.

This was partially due to the UAE on the list to get US F-35s, with Israel objecting of course, via its long time canard of ‘any country that can defend itself from an Israeli attack is a threat to Israel and hence on its preemptive strike list. I will close my missive for the day with the old saying, “With friends like this who needs enemies?” … Jim W. Dean ]

The UNSC, a battleground in itself

– First published …September 19, 2020

Britain, France and Germany have told the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) that the sanctions relief provided by the world body for Iran – agreed under a 2015 nuclear deal – will continue beyond September 20 in outright rejection of assertions by the United States that the bans will snap back then.

In 2015, Iran clinched a landmark nuclear deal with a group of countries then known as the P5+1 — Britain, France, Russia, China, and Germany.

However, US President Donald Trump in 2018 unilaterally pulled his country out of the deal – officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) – and re-imposed the sanctions that had been lifted under the deal.

On August 20, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that Washington formally triggered a 30-day process at the UNSC leading to a return of virtually all the UN sanctions on Iran on September 20. He cited what he claimed to be Iranian violations of the JCPOA, to which the US is no longer a party.

On Friday, the permanent representatives of the UK, Germany and France said in a joint letter to the 15-member UNSC that any decision or action taken to restore the UN sanctions “would be incapable of legal effect.”

“In this letter, we expressed our shared view that the purported notification under paragraph 11 of UNSCR 2231 (2015) received from the United States of America and circulated to the UN Security Council Members is incapable of having legal effect and so cannot bring into effect the procedure foreseen under OP 11.

It flows from this that any decision and actions which would be taken based on this procedure or on its possible outcome would also be incapable of having any effect,” read part of the joint letter by the UN envoys of the three European countries, known as E3.

The E3 further said that they had “worked tirelessly to preserve the nuclear agreement and remain committed to do so.” They also stressed they would remain committed to “fully implementing” a 2015 Security Council resolution that endorses the JCPOA.

Earlier on Friday, the E3 in a joint statement hailed Tehran’s encouraging statements on its intention to further strengthen its cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The trio’s joint statement, which had been issued on the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Safeguards Agreement with Iran, was delivered to the IAEA Board of Governors at the September 2020 meeting.

On Thursday, Iran’s permanent representative to Vienna-based international organizations Kazem Gharibabadi said Iran has the most transparent nuclear program among the IAEA member states, as proven through numerous inspections of the country’s nuclear sites by the UN agency.

“The fact that 22 percent of all global inspections done by the IAEA has been carried out in Iran proves that Iran enjoys the most transparent peaceful nuclear program among the member states of the agency,” Gharibabadi added, in an address to the IAEA Board of Governors.

On August 14, the UNSC rejected a US-drafted resolution to extend an arms embargo on Iran that is due to expire in October under the JCPOA.

  1. How about sinking an Israeli Sub, before they start firing tactical nukes at Iran? At least China / Russia should expose their locations in Persian Gulf.

    • Please note that the reason Japan attacked Pearl Harbor was because of US sanctions and aggressive military deployments closer to Japan. In fact, Major General Smedley Butler sarcastically warned that “the Japanese, a proud people, of course will be pleased beyond expression to see the United States fleet so close;” and he said this six years before Pearl Harbor. But to the people who fought for the banker gangsters against Japan, did any of that matter?

Today, if Iran does not provide a Project for a New American Century “new Pearl Harbor,” the banksters probably will just false flag something, like Tommy said. But isn’t the most important part whether or not people can be convinced the banksters’ side is in the right?

  2. This is only going to make Trump and his stupid Christian Zionist base even more desperate. When he took that “thirty pieces of silver” from Sheldon Adelson back in 2016 it was with the understanding that he would kill the Iranian nuclear deal. Not only is it not dead but it’s alive and well. Trump, Pompeo, and Pence must be beside themselves and willing to do just about anything. False-flag attack, maybe on the carrier USS Sitting Duck, coming right up, folks. Israeli submarines are prowling the Persian Gulf as I write this…

    • Yes they are, and Russian submarines know exactly where they’re at. Quite likely Iranian submarines do given Iran’s expertise in electronics technology.
There’s a fair chance a Russian destroyer, may cruise up should a carrier be struck with an Israeli torpedo, as happened during the attack on Liberty.
Israel blundered it’s last attempt at a false flag attack.
