A confidential trove of government documents obtained by The Washington Post after a three-year legal battle reveals that senior U.S. officials failed to tell the truth about the war in Afghanistan throughout the 18-year campaign, making rosy pronouncements they knew to be false and hiding unmistakable evidence the war had become unwinnable.

The documents contain more than 400 interviews with insiders who offered unrestrained criticism of what went wrong in Afghanistan and how the United States became mired in nearly two decades of warfare.

John Sopko, the head of the federal agency that conducted the interviews entitled “Lessons Learned,” acknowledged to The Post that the documents show “the American people have constantly been lied to.”

With most speaking on the assumption that their remarks would not become public, U.S. officials acknowledged that their warfighting strategies were fatally flawed and that Washington wasted enormous sums of money trying to remake Afghanistan into a modern nation.

The interviews also highlight the U.S. government’s botched attempts to curtail runaway corruption, build a competent Afghan army and police force, and put a dent in Afghanistan’s thriving opium trade.

  1. “the U.S. government’s botched attempts to curtail runaway corruption, build a competent Afghan army and police force, and put a dent in Afghanistan’s thriving opium trade.” Now this is truly laughable…as each and every charge is quite true, as they were the exact goals intended. Objectives achieved. The only ones not to know are the US taxpayer, who believes every fairy-tail…and keeps paying in more ways than one. This of course neglects the effects on the rest of the world. They fall in line and take their cut. Otherwise the whole money laundering and dope distribution scam would have been outed long ago. Even Russia, who has called this out does not scream loud enough, which makes one wonder as well.

  2. Didn’t the Taliban have the opium about stopped and the US + Israel wanted to flood heroin to Russia, so we helped Afgan farmers to start it up again. I remember reading here on VT that we got it going again. The part about us stopping it seems to be a bit rose colored…if not completely false. Otherwise….Afganistan was a total waste. Except it did accomplish some goals of the Oded Yinon Plan….to force jew refugees to go to Israel.

  3. If only Congress was full of CommieFornia Libtards like Barbara Lee: the ONE person with the courage and integrity to vote NO.

If only Congress was full of Davey Crockets when Trump’s hero the brutal dictator told SCOTUS “Let’s see you enFORCE the law & stop me”, then committed the genocidal #DeadliestUSTerrorEvent.
If only the US military wasn’t… #JustFollowingOrders.
