Debates turn emotional as schools decide how and if to open

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — School districts across America are in the midst of making wrenching decisions over how to resume classes in settings radically altered by the coronavirus pandemic, with school buses running below capacity, virtual learning, outdoor classrooms and quarantine protocols for infected children the new norm.
The plans for the upcoming school year are taking shape by the day, and vary district to district, state to state. The debates have been highly emotional, with tempers flaring among parents and administrators, and have been made all the more vexing by record numbers of COVID-19 cases being reported each day.
In Florida, some school districts want students back in the classroom in early August, even though the virus is surging through communities. On average, Florida has reported more than 7,000 new cases each day recently — more than seven times what it was reporting a month ago.
New Mexico, which has been largely spared major outbreaks, plans a hybrid model of virtual and in-person learning. Parents in New York have demanded schools reopen in the fall. If politics is left out of the calculation, there should not be a school reopening at end of Summer. There are liability issues here that supersede school boards, or state boards of education. I’ll make a prediction: There will be no students on college campuses, no collegiate athletics, no secondary or primary classes, neither this Fall, nor until a viable, proven efficacious, vaccine is available.
I’ve been a teacher since 1971 and although schools have changed dramatically in the past fifty years, they are still the only hope out there for bringing most kids around to being full human beings. I currently am a high school Special Education teacher and the kiddos I work with wouldn’t have even been in school 50 years ago. They love coming to school. It is their only chance for social interaction with “normal” teenagers. And, I get to work with the best kids in the school when they come down to be peer tutors with them, altruistic, compassionate, outgoing, just what you would hope your own children could become. I don’t know what planet that dude who posted earlier came from, but it certainly isn’t the one I live on.
Knowledge and awareness of the variety of life , was better taught without religion and without a compulsory system. But, I shudder at the thought of your world view.
Classic case of “inside the box thinking”. Schools have been under siege and the decisions about this have been hampered by options. The number of options is guided by habit and dogma.
The issue I have studied, is ” why is public school compulsory ?”. The top of the list for why is, “data suggesting children are abused and vulnerable if they do not attend school”, so this is the thing. but the real reason is , compulsory education is necessary for predatory capitalism to thrive in the richest country in the world. It is a weeding process used to organize labor and exploit every facet of human potential or weakness. Education , has merits, but the compulsory nature of it is not one of those merits.
